TOURIST ATTRACTIONS  IN  MABIRA    FOREST

Mabira Forest is an important eco-tourism destination and is one of the most important attractions between Kampala and Jinja, where the River Nile begins its long journey to the Mediterranean Sea.The forest  is located along  the main Jinja to Kampala highway, it is 54km from Kampala and 20km from Jinja.
The forest center is on the edge of Najjembe village approximately 500m north of the main road. The forest is one hour’s drive from the capital and just half an hour’s drive from Jinja

This huge and beautiful forest of 306 km² can be explored via an extensive trail network. Guided and unguided trails are available. For the energetic, there is a circular 25 km bike trail that links the forest to the surrounding sugar and tea plantations.

 The forest trails cater for people of all time schedules and abilities and give visitors fantastic views into the forest canopy and opportunities to discover close up a fascinating array of forest life.
The forest center has three traditional styled African Banda’s offering visitors private and comfortable accommodations set in beautiful forest glades. Each Banda has it’s own balcony with views into the forest which is a perfect spot to relax after a forest walk.

The main tourist activities in the forest include, bird watching, among the birds here include:
Nahan’s , Francolin , Cassin Hawk Eagle , the Forest Wood hoope, the Purple  throated Cuckoo, the Tit Hylia, the Red Headed Blue Bill, the Black bellied Seed Cracker, the Shining Blue Kingfisher and the Blue headed Crested Monarc. Some of these species can only be found in Mabira.
Other unique features to be explored in the Forest Reserve include 218 Butterfly species, 97 Moth Species, 23 Small Mammal Species especially Primate Species of the Monkey Clan and the spectacular Griffin Falls
Activities in the Forest Reserve include Forest Walks with over 68km of well developed Trail length, Mountain Biking, Bird Watching, Environmental Education and Research, Camping and Picnics, Primate Watching, Butterfly Identification and general Forest Exploration.

Its importante to note that  Mabira is the biggest forest in Uganda.
