The forest has
over 1,500 Chimpanzees found in this Jungle Rainforest plus 13 other species of
primates. Kibale is 795km2 and
contains one of the most beautiful and with the most varying tracts of
tropical forest in the whole of Uganda.
Kibale is well
known for it’s various and large population of Primates in Africa. The most
popular include the great chimpanzees and its acknowledged that Kibale is about
1450 chimpanzees. It also harbors a rare species called L’Hoest’s monkey along
with the colobus monkeys. Among others include blue monkeys, black and white
colobus, red tailed monkey, bush baby and cheeked mangabey.
The forest reserve
is located in Bushenyi District in Western Uganda. It is approximately 375km
from Kampala. The total number of Chimpanzees in the Reserve is at
approximately 240. However, only two Groups of about 70 can be accessed by
tourists at the moment.
Budongo Forest is a moist, semi-deciduous
tropical rain forest located at the top of the Albertine Rift .
The forest is
a home to some 600-700 chimpanzees
and it has three groups of chimpanzees
in the Forest that have been habituated to humans.
These include:
a). Busingiro community
Far to the west of the Sonso chimpanzees lives this community of chimpanzees, which is being habituated for tourists to go chimp-watching. These chimpanzees are the descendants of those originally studied by Prof. Reynolds, and by Profs. Sugiyama and Suzuki, in the 1960s. The site is located on the road from Masindi to Butiaba.b) Kaniyo-Pabidi community
These chimpanzees, also being habituated for tourism, live in an area of forest in the north-east of Budongo. Interestingly, they travel into the surrounding savannah, and also cross into the main part of Budongo forest.c) The Sonso chimpanzees that have been studied continuously since 1990. This community lives near the site of a former sawmill. It is called the Sonso community after the River Sonso, which runs through its range. These are also habituated for tourists.
The
gorge is located within Queen
Elizabeth National Park. It is a home to a variety of wildlife, including the
only primates in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Kyambura Gorge harbors the only family of habituated chimpanzees in
Africa. Chimpanzee tracking safaris depart from Fig Tree Camp each
morning at 08:00 Hrs and in the afternoon at 13:00 Hrs. Only eight
permits are available per session. Thus it’s important to make prior
booking. Besides Chimpanzees, other animals found in Kyambura Gorge
include Red tailed, Vervet, Black and White colobus monkeys, olive baboons and
giant forest hog.
Bwindi
is located in the south-western part of Uganda with approximately 540km from
Kampala . It occupies 331 sq km and lies on the edge of the Western Rift valley
and is shared by Kanungu, Kabale and Kisoro districts. Bwindi Impenetrable
national park is a home to roughly half of the world's mountain gorillas (326
gorillas). In the World today
The
park also has 11 primate species and these primates include the black-and-white
colobus, with its lovely flowing white tail, L’Hoest Monkey, Red Tailed monkeys
among others. The forest is also rich in bird life (360 species) with 23 highly
localized Albertine Rift endemics being present in the park.
The reserve is situated in the
extreme west of Uganda in Bundibugyo District. It lies along the Uganda/
Democratic Republic of Congo border within the western arm of the East African
Rift valley. In the south east are the Rwenzori Mountains, to the west is
Democratic Republic of Congo and to theThe reserve has 9 species of primates. These include: chimpanzee, blue monkey, vervet monkeys and olive baboons while the nocturnal primates include pottos and galagos. Also to be found are Forest buffalo, blue duiker
Ngamba Island Sanctuary that is a home of 39 orphanage chimps. It is located on Lake Victoria. Chimpanzee tracking here goes at specific time in the day. You will be given a short introduction and briefing about the chimps while at the sanctuary . You will then View the morning feeding of the chimpanzees from the visitors platform area along the edge of the sanctuary fence, it is fascinating to watch the chimps interact with each other and with their keepers.
